What is Knowledge Base Only?

Knowledge Base Only is an import method designed for service-based businesses that do not sell physical or digital products. Instead of syncing a product catalog, your AI assistant is powered entirely by your knowledge base — PDFs, links, documents, and custom content.

This is ideal for:

  • Clinics and healthcare providers — answer patient FAQs, explain services, share appointment info
  • SaaS companies — handle support queries, onboarding questions, and feature explanations
  • Agencies and consultancies — present your services, portfolio, and contact information
  • Education and training — provide course details, enrollment guidance, and learning resources
  • Legal and financial services — share general information, process explanations, and office details

How It Works

When you select Knowledge Base Only during setup, Relio:

  1. Scans your website automatically to detect your brand name, logo, primary color, and language
  2. Skips the product import step entirely — no catalogs, no feeds, no sync
  3. Goes straight to assistant configuration where you name your bot and set the brand identity
  4. Uses your knowledge base as the sole source of truth for AI conversations

Your assistant will answer questions based exclusively on the content you provide through the Knowledge section in your dashboard.

Setting Up Knowledge Base Only

1. Start the Setup Wizard

From your Relio dashboard, begin the setup wizard for a new site.

2. Choose Import Method

On step 3 (Import Method), select the Knowledge Base Only card. It is located in the bottom row alongside CSV Upload and Auto-Crawler.

3. Click Apply Method

After selecting the card, click Apply Method. Relio will scan your website to extract your brand identity (name, favicon, primary color, language).

4. Customize Your Assistant

You will land on the Chatbot step where you can:

  • Adjust the bot name (auto-generated from your domain)
  • Change the avatar/logo (detected from your favicon)
  • Modify the primary color (extracted from your site)
  • Review the auto-generated greeting messages

5. Install the Widget

Complete the final step to get your embed code and install the chat widget on your site.

Adding Knowledge Content

After setup, navigate to Knowledge in your dashboard sidebar. You can add content through several methods:

Upload PDFs

Upload PDF documents containing FAQs, service descriptions, pricing sheets, or any relevant documentation. Relio will parse and index the content automatically.

Add Links

Paste URLs to your website pages, help docs, or any public content. Relio will crawl and ingest the page content.

Write Custom Content

Use the text editor to write custom knowledge entries. This is useful for specific Q&A pairs, internal policies, or information not available on your website.

Structured Data

Add structured information like opening hours, contact details, service lists, and pricing tables.

How the AI Uses Your Knowledge

Without a product catalog, the AI assistant adapts its behavior:

  • No product recommendations — the assistant will not attempt to suggest or compare products
  • Knowledge-first answers — all responses are grounded in your uploaded knowledge base
  • Service-oriented tone — the assistant positions itself as a helpful guide rather than a sales agent
  • Honest boundaries — if a question falls outside your knowledge base, the assistant will say so rather than hallucinate

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I switch from Knowledge Base Only to a product import later? Yes. You will need to delete your current site from the site switcher in the top bar and create a new one through the setup wizard, selecting a product-based import method (WooCommerce, Shopify, XML Feed, etc.). Your knowledge base content is tied to the site, so make sure to back up any important documents before deleting. Alternatively, contact support and we can change your import method without losing data.

Do I still get analytics? Absolutely. Conversation analytics, lead capture, and visitor insights work the same way regardless of your import method.

Can I use both products and knowledge base? Yes. If you use a product import method (WooCommerce, Shopify, XML Feed, etc.), you can also add knowledge base content. The AI will use both sources. Knowledge Base Only simply means you start without products.

Is there a limit on knowledge base content? Knowledge base limits depend on your plan. Check the Pricing page for details on each tier.

Does the website scan work for all sites? The automatic scan works for most public websites. If your site blocks crawlers or is behind authentication, you may need to manually set your bot name, logo, and color in the assistant configuration step.
